Wire-sewn. The cover shows natural yellowing, occasional foxing, and soiling along the edges; tears with small paper losses along the top and bottom edges of the front cover. Condition: good.

The publication has historical and cultural value and is of collecting interest; Yakiv Hnizdovskyi’s design is of independent artistic interest.

INFORMATION

The most valuable items in this issue are Mykola Zherov’s (1890–1937) sonnet “For the New Year,” dated January 1, 1932, and printed here for the first time, with an editorial note that Kyivans half-jokingly called Hollywood the Kyiv film factory. Also included are Lyudmyla Kovalenko’s short story “Fear,” Izy Levkovych’s sketch “From the Native Land” on Christmas and New Year customs, an excerpt from “The Lohansky Girls’ Room” from the first volume of Ulas Samchuk’s novel “Ost,” Svyatoslav Hordynskyi’s diary entries “Eleven Days on the Ocean” about the move to America in the fall of 1947, Volodymyr Kyveliuk’s article on Byzantinism in painting, Yevhen Olenski’s essay on “Christmas” in music, texts by Katrin Hrynevych, Yevhen Malaniuk, Tadosi Osmachok, Dokia Humennia, Oleksii Izarskyi, Yurii Kosach, and Borys Krupnytskyi. The illustration insert reproduces the “St. Nicholas” mosaic from St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv (1037); the art section contains drawings by Henri Matisse from the exhibition of French graphics at the Munich Galerie Hans.

“Arka” was published in Munich from July 1947 as a supplement to the newspaper Ukrayinska Trybuna in cooperation with the publishing commission of MUR — the Ukrainian Art Movement, founded in 1945 in Fürth; hence the MUR mark on the back cover. It was perhaps the most prominent literary journal of the “DP” era: it deliberately placed Ukrainian literature alongside contemporary Western literature. From the second year of publication, Yurii Sheriekh became editor-in-chief — a pseudonym for the linguist and critic Yurii Shevelov (1908–2002), the leading ideologue of MUR. All the journal’s art design, including the arcade mark on the cover, is by Yakiv Hnizdovskyi (1915–1985), who later became one of the most famous Ukrainian graphic artists in the United States.

This issue opens the second year of publication. The journal lasted less than two years, and data on its print run vary: the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies lists eight issues, the USHMM catalog lists issues up to No. 5 (May 1948), and the bibliographic index of the Scientific Library of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (2003) lists eleven issues; the discrepancy remains unresolved. Print runs of camp publications were small, the paper was cheap, and individual issues of “Arka” in good condition are rarely found.
