The book opens with an overview of the subject’s history, from Herder, Fichte, and Palacký to Mancini, Renan, Masaryk, and Drahomanov; the author then examines the components and structure of the nation, ethno- and nation-building, social structure, race, territory, language, culture, and religion, while the book concludes with chapters on ethnopolitics and natiology, particularly nation-states. In the preface, Bochkivsky warns that this is neither a textbook nor a systematic course, but a series of essays, and recommends a separate monograph, “The Modern Nation.”

Olhert-Ipolyt Bochkivsky (1885–1939) was a sociologist and political activist born at the Dolynska railway station, in present-day Kirovohrad Oblast. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University in Prague (1909), taught sociology at the Ukrainian Economic Academy in Poděbrady, and from 1936 to 1939 was a professor of sociology at the Ukrainian Technical-Economic Institute in Prague; from 1935, he was a member of the NTSh. He died in Prague. He is considered the founder of Ukrainian natiology.

The work was previously published as “Introduction to Natiology. Course of Lectures” (Regensburg: UTGI, 1947). The Ukrainian Technical-Economic Institute was founded in 1932 in Poděbrady as an external school of the Ukrainian Economic Academy and resumed operations in Germany after the war, so the 1991–1992 Munich edition was published by the institute where the author had once taught. A shortened version of the work appeared in Ukraine only in 1998, published by the Kyiv-based Genesis Publishing House.
