The edition was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Franko’s literary work, which was recognized that same year. The title is explained in the preface: in Old Rus’, emeralds were the names given to collections of parables and instructive tales—a course in practical Christian morality; Franko sought to present a similar book in the language of poetry.

The collection consists of six cycles: “Odes,” “Pareneticon,” “Parables,” “Legends,” “Through the Villages,” and “To Brazil.” The book opens with the programmatic “The Poet Speaks,” “Ukraine Speaks,” and “You, Brother, Love Rus’”—a polemical response to Vasyl Shchuratov. “Pareneticon” contains moral and ethical parables based on Old Russian and Eastern sources; “Parables” and “Legends” are adaptations of biblical, Byzantine, and Oriental motifs. The last two cycles are addressed to contemporary times: the poverty of a Galician village and the first wave of emigration.

In 1911, Franko published “Old and New”—a second, enlarged edition of “My Emerald.”
