The biblical story of the prophet who led the people through the wilderness for forty years but never entered the promised land became for Franko a conversation with his own people, and the prologue “My people, tormented, broken” has long since lived on separately from the poem. The text in this edition is accompanied by articles by Yurii Sheveliov (1908–2002). In the introductory “What We Know About the Poem,” he examines all the “prototypes” identified by literary scholars—from Słowacki and Milton to de Vigny and Vrchlickij—and concludes that Franko’s work is entirely original. The appendices include Franko’s preface to Volodymyr Kobryn’s Polish translation (Lviv, 1913) and Kornil Ustianovych’s “Moses” (1891), the only earlier Ukrainian work on the same subject.

The frontispiece—the prophet with raised hands on a rock—and the initials were created by Olena Kulchytska (1877–1967), and the book itself is dedicated to her memory. According to the publisher’s note, the initiative to publish the edition was supported by her former students from Przemyśl, where she taught for over a quarter of a century: in memory of their teacher, they raised $635 for it. The overall artistic design is by Yakiv Hnyzdovskyi (1915–1985), one of the most renowned graphic artists of the Ukrainian diaspora. The book was printed in a print run of 2,000 copies at the Svoboda Press in Jersey City.
