On the front of Part 1’s wrapper, there are dark spots at the bottom and small specks; on the back of Part 1, there are three dark specks near the right edge and scratches. The text blocks are clean, and the paper shows slight, even yellowing; the edges of individual sheets in Part 1 have small reddish specks, and there is a dark speck near the spine on Part 1’s title page. The number “800” is written in pencil in the upper left corner of the back of Part 2’s wrapper. The narrative is told in the first person—an elderly Wingfield, at the request of Queen Elizabeth, recounts twenty years spent among the Indians during the time of Cortés. Setting out to find his mother’s murderer, he travels to Mexico, witnesses the arrival of the Spaniards, the siege of the city, and the sacrificial stone. “Montezuma's Daughter” was published in English in 1893; in July–October of that year, it was serialized in the London magazine “The Graphic.”

Henry Rider Haggard (1856–1925) was an English writer and author of “King Solomon’s Mines” and “She”; a brief biographical note about him is included at the end of Part Two of this edition. Haggard himself later considered “Montezuma's Daughter” the last of his finest books, believing the rest of his fiction to be repetitive.

The Ukrainian edition is divided into two parts: the first covers Chapters I–XX and ends with the battle for the Teocalli pyramid, while the second begins with Chapter XXI. Published in Philadelphia under the “Kyiv” imprint—the name of the literary and artistic bimonthly (1950–1964) edited and published by Bohdan Romanenchuk; his “Azbukovnyk” was also published under this imprint in 1969. The translator Antin Tsurkovsky (1882–1955), originally from Zolochiv, was a journalist and editor of “Svoboda” and Philadelphia’s “America,” secretary of the “Providinnya” Society, and member of the NTSh. The signature “Hord.” on the wrapper likely belongs to Sviatoslav Hordynsky (1906–1993), a poet, artist, and art historian who wrote articles for the magazine “Kyiv.”
