VIII. 09.” The essay was written in August 1909: it began in the Hutsul region of Kryvorivnia, where the historian spent the summer at his own villa, and ended in Kyiv. This is a popular narrative for the general reader, incorporating songs and laments—from the suppressed uprisings of Ostryhan and Huna and Khmelnytsky’s service as a military secretary and Chyhyryn captain to his burial in Subotiv and Stefan Charnetsky’s desecration of the Hetman’s remains. The book opens with an image of the monument to Khmelnytsky in Kyiv and concludes with the lament “It was not black clouds that obscured the bright sun.”

Mykhailo Hrushevsky (1866–1934) was a historian, long-time president of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, and author of the ten-volume “History of Ukraine-Rus.” The American edition was published in 1918, when the Central Rada, under his presidency, proclaimed the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic by the Fourth Universal.

The brochure was published by Myroslav Sichynsky (1887–1979)—the same man who on April 12, 1908, shot the Governor of Galicia, Andrzej Potocki, in Lviv, was sentenced to death, commuted to twenty years’ imprisonment, escaped from Stanislaviv prison in 1911, and had lived in the United States since 1914. It was printed by the Ukrainian Printing and Publishing Association on East Seventh Street, 19, in New York. On the final pages is a call to join the Federation of Ukrainians in the United States, founded in the fall of 1915 at the same address, and an advertisement for the printing house. The price of 35 cents was aimed at the immigrant worker: such brochures were the main textbooks on their own history for the overseas community.

https://archivevam.com/en/products/hrushevskyi-pro-batka-kozatskoho-bohdana-khmelnytskoho-1918-obkladynka
