The collection consists of the essay "Instead of a Foreword" and eleven humoresques, from "The Martyr for the Cause" and "The Jubilee of a Distinguished Scientist" to "The Forest Brigade Strike" and "The Journey of a Displaced Person Through Suffering". The book was illustrated by Edvard Kozak (1902–1992), a leading Ukrainian caricaturist, with whom Kernytskyi would later edit the humorous monthly magazine "Lys Mykyta" in America.

Ivan Kernytskyi (1913–1984; pseudonyms Iker, Ivan Hzymz, Papai) was a prose writer and feuilletonist, born in Sukhodol, in the Bibrichyna region. Before the war, he worked at Ivan Tyktor's publishing house "Ukrainska Presa", wrote for the humorous magazines "Zyz" and "Komar", and published the short story collections "Svyatoivans'ki Vohni" (1934) and "Miy Svit" (1938); in 1942–1944, he wrote for the "Veselyi Lviv" theater. After the war, he was held in a displaced persons camp in Austria, and from 1949 lived in New York, where he was a feuilletonist for the "Svoboda" newspaper and co-editor of "Lys Mykyta". In exile, his works "Periletni Ptahy" (1952), "Heroi Peredmistia" (1958), and "Budni i Nediia" (1973) were also published.

The book was printed by the Munich printing house R. Oldenbourg and published by the Ukrainian Publishing Union. This copy passed through two emigré libraries—the Ukrainian Library at Ashaffenburg and the library of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich; the issue slip contains seven marks for incomplete half-years, so the book was indeed read in the camp. In 2012, the humoresques were reprinted in Kernytskyi's selected "Korol Stril'tsiv" (Lviv: Apriorii).
