The “Opposition,” led by Lev Rebet and Zinoviy Matlo and supported by the OUN-Z’s overseas representation, argued that the underground in Ukraine had adopted democratic positions after the Third Extraordinary Great Assembly of 1943, while the OUN-Z Leadership and Stepan Bandera had deviated from them—in short, “The Opposition fights for democracy, while the OUN-Z is against democracy.” Mirchuk argues the opposite in three parts—“Classless society,” the question of the socio-political order, and the problem of ideology—and uses the underground’s own texts as evidence: the 1943 Programmatic Resolutions with the 1950 supplements of the OUN Conference on Ukrainian Lands, the “Clarification of the OUN Leadership on Ukrainian Lands,” the works of Petro Poltava, and Osyp Dyakiv-Hornovyi’s letter to the OUN-Z Leadership, with which the book opens.

Petro Mirchuk (1913–1999) was a member of the OUN from the early 1930s, head of its propaganda apparatus in 1939, a prisoner in Auschwitz and Mauthausen, and lived in the United States from 1952; author of “An Outline of the History of the OUN” and “The Ukrainian Insurgent Army 1942–1952.” Here he writes as a participant in the conflict, so the book is at once a primary source for the history of the split and a partisan account of events.

The pamphlet was published by the author and printed in London by the Ukrainian Publishing Union—the printing house of the Banderite milieu in Great Britain. Polemical publications of the internal emigré disputes were mostly circulated among the membership and did not enter libraries in Ukraine.

https://archivevam.com/en/products/mirchuk-petro-za-chystotu-pozytsii-ukrainskoho-vyzvolnoho-rukhu-1955
