The volume collected all of Moroz’s writings: the essays “Report from the Beria Nature Reserve” (1967), “Among the Snows,” “Chronicle of Resistance,” and “Moses and Dathan,” prison poetry, letters to his wife, statements, and appeals. The appendices contain materials from both court cases and sentences, speeches in his defense, and reports on the hunger strike; the volume concludes with a bibliography of Moroz’s publications, notes to the texts, and an index of names.

Valentyn Moroz (1936–2019) was a historian and publicist and one of the Soviet Union’s most famous political prisoners. He graduated from the Faculty of History at Lviv University (1958) and taught history at the pedagogical institutes in Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk. He was first arrested by the KGB on September 1, 1965, during the repression of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, sentenced to four years in a strict-regime camp in the Mordovian ASSR, and released in 1969. He was arrested again in 1970 and sentenced to fourteen years in camps and exile; on the night of April 28, 1979, he was exchanged for two Soviet spies at New York’s Kennedy Airport. After settling in the United States, he taught at Harvard; he returned to Ukraine in 1997 and died in Lviv in 2019.

The Suschasnist edition was the first attempt to collect Moroz’s writings in Ukrainian: until then, they had appeared only in periodicals, collections, and individual pamphlets, and in 1974 two English-language collections from different publishers appeared in the United States—there was no Ukrainian equivalent. The cover and design, featuring portraits of Valentyn and Raisa Moroz and a photograph of Raisa with her son in their Ivano-Frankivsk home, were created by Yakiv Hnyzdovsky (1915–1985). The book was published in the Suschasnist Publishing House’s (Munich) “Socio-Political Library” series, Part 19(38), as the ninth issue in the documents subseries; the title page is also provided in English.
