Popova’s study is one of the first monographs on Sergei Svyatoslavsky (published as Svyatoslavsky), a landscape painter who was ranked alongside Levitan and Arkhipov during his lifetime. The author traces his development from Moscow studios to landscapes of Kyiv and Central Asia, cites correspondence from his contemporaries, and describes the artist’s public stance — his participation in the competition for a design for a monument to Shevchenko and his defense of the students expelled from the Kyiv School of Art in 1905.

Sergei Svyatoslavsky (1857–1931) was born in Kyiv. In 1875–1883, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Aleksei Savrasov, Vasily Perov, and Vasily Polenov, alongside Isaak Levitan and Konstantin Korovin. While still a student, he sold the landscape “From the Window of the Moscow School of Painting” to Pavel Tretyakov. From 1884, he exhibited with the Association of Travelling Artists, and in 1891 became a member of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions. After returning to Kyiv, he settled in the Kurenivka district and painted landscapes of the Dnieper, rural and urban motifs — “Oxen in the Field,” “Street of a Provincial Town,” “Myrhorod,” — and traveled to Central Asia three times. During the 1905 Revolution, he collaborated with the satirical magazine “Shershyn.” In the early 1920s, he gave up painting due to eye problems; he died alone and forgotten and was buried at the Lukyaniv Cemetery.

The book was approved for publication in September 1955 and printed at the “Komunist” printing house in Kharkiv. Svyatoslavsky’s work was later the subject of albums published in 1961 and 1989 and a monograph by Olha Zhbankova (2005), but Popova’s study remains one of the first attempts to provide a comprehensive account of the artist’s life and legacy.
