G. Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR—as Ivan Dziuba writes in his introduction, "The Sculptor of His Own Spirit." The poems are organized according to the collections "Winter Trees" (1958–1989), "The Cheerful Cemetery" (1970), "Palimpsests" (1972–1979), and "A Candle in a Candlebox" (1972–1976); poems from different years not marked with asterisks are published for the first time. In addition to poetry, the book includes documents, including letters from Malva Landy and Tetiana Khodorovych to "Amnesty International, PEN Clubs, and people of goodwill!" (November 1976) regarding the persecution of the poet in Mordovian camps: in 1976, all the works he had written in the camp were confiscated from him, and their destruction (at least six hundred poems) was officially announced.

Vasyl Stus (1938–1985) was a poet, translator, and literary scholar, and one of Ukraine's most famous political prisoners. First arrested in 1972, he served time in a camp in Mordovia and was exiled to Kolyma; in 1980, he was sentenced a second time—to ten years in a special-regime prison and five years of exile—and died in camp VS-389/36 in Kuchina, in the Urals, in September 1985. In 1989, he was reburied at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.

The edition was edited by Oleh Orach, and the cover was designed by Bohdan Pikulsky based on a work by Mykola Bidniak (b. 1930), a Toronto artist who lost both arms at the age of fifteen and painted by holding a brush in his mouth; in 1990, after a half-century hiatus, he came to Lviv, where he spent the last years of his life. An interesting detail: in the bibliographic card on the copyright page, the poet's birth and death years are printed incorrectly as 1933–1985, while on the reverse of the title page they are correctly printed as 1938–1985.
