The collection publishes for the first time Mazepa’s letters to Sieniawski — the Voivode of Belz and Grand Hetman of the Crown — for 1704–1708, the most critical period of the Northern War, together with the secret reports of Franciszek Grabie, Sieniawski’s personal envoy at the Hetman’s court. The texts are presented in the original language from manuscripts in the Czartoryski Library in Kraków, with English summaries of each letter, notes, portraits, facsimiles, and an index.

Orest Subtelny (1941–2016) — historian, later a professor at the University of York in Toronto, and author of the textbook “Ukraine: A History” (1988). He collected the material in 1971, working for nearly a year in Polish archives, and completed the book as a research associate at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute in 1973–1974; the topic of the Mazepists later became the main subject of his monograph “The Mazepists” (1981). The preface was written by Oleksander Ohloblyn (1899–1992), a leading scholar of the Mazepa era, who also read the manuscript; the index was compiled by the editor’s father, M.
