Price: $0.50.

Publisher's cover of heavy cream paper: illustration in green, brown, and purple — a herd of animals fleeing in terror down a slope; the author's name at the top and the title at the bottom are in a drawn font. The cover paper is evenly darkened, with rubbed edges and corners and small creases; there is a tear at the top near the spine; on the back cover, there is a large light-brown water stain in the upper left corner. Children's inscriptions appear on the front cover: the word to the left in blue ink, with a strike-through in red and blue below; on the back cover, "400" is written in pencil. The text block is held together by wire staples, which hold it securely; the sheets are full. The paper is yellowed at the edges, and the line drawings and text are clear. On the title page, the title is covered by a publisher's sticker with the word "...POLOK," beneath which the printed "POYED..." is visible; below is the "Nashim Dityam OPDL" mark. Condition: good.

Lifetime edition. The book is of collector's interest, and the graphic design has independent artistic value.

INFORMATION

A rhyming story about how fear grows. A boy named Ulas falls asleep in a field, and mosquitoes gather over him — and from this trifle, an avalanche begins: a hamster calls a quail, and a partridge and a thrush spread the word "trouble, trouble," a crayfish summons the fish, and a bear finally frightens the company with a story about three forty-legged monsters whose gaze turns them to stone. The page illustrations depict these monsters as they are imagined by a terrified animal — a cloud of gaping maws and tails; the text is built on a counting rhythm and intended to be read aloud.

Roman Zavadovych (1903–1985) was a writer, journalist, and educator, one of the most prolific authors of Ukrainian children's books in exile; author of "The Adventures of the Gnome Romtomtomik," "The Boys of the Green Forest," and "Kobzar's Guest House." Born in Zborivshchyna, he made his debut in 1920 in Lviv's "Svit Dityny," emigrated to Germany in 1944, and in 1947 became a co-founder of the Ukrainian Association of Children's Literature Workers. From 1949, he lived in Chicago, taught at the Ukrainian School and the branch of the Ukrainian Catholic University, and from 1954 to 1985 was a member of the editorial board of the magazine "Veselka."

The book appeared in the "Yevshan Zillya" series published by the OPDL itself, printed in Jersey City by Svoboda Press — the largest Ukrainian printing house in America — with a print run of 2,500 copies and cost fifty cents. The sticker with the corrected title, pasted over the printed title page, is evidence of a publisher's correction made during the print run. Cheap children's books from the Ukrainian diaspora were read until they fell apart, and copies with an intact text block and preserved cover are rare.
