Historical and cultural value: a monument of Galician periodicals from the 1860s, featuring texts about Khmelnytskyi’s Ukraine and the Cossack era.

INFORMATION

The issue opens with a continuation of Narodna istoriya Rusy — a chapter on Bohdan Khmelnytskyi’s campaign in Volhynia and the Battle of Pyliavtsi in 1648: negotiations with Voivode Kysel, the Cossack army’s march from Bila Tserkva to the Sлуч River, and the Hetman’s proud words: “Know, O Cossack, our Sлуч!” This is followed by A. Razin’s historical novella Hetman Stepan Ostryanytsia about Cossack life during the Union era and the rule of the Vyshnevetsky family. Both texts end with the words “To be continued.”

Halychynyn (1867–1870) was a fortnightly socio-political and literary supplement to the Lviv-based Slovo, the main organ of Galician Moscowophiles; a total of 90 issues were published. It was published and edited by Bohdan Dedytskyi (1827–1909), a poet, prose writer, and journalist who edited Slovo from 1861 to 1871. The periodical was printed in yazyk—an artificial mixture of Ukrainian and Russian—and contained articles on Ukrainian history, poems by Mykhailo Maksymovych, Sydor Vorobkevych, and Kornyl Ostianovych, as well as works by Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Tyutchev.

Narodna istoriya Rusy in the periodical was probably written by Dedytskyi himself: he published the first part of a work with this title as a separate book in Lviv in 1868. The issue was printed at the Stavropigiya Institute press, which had inherited the press of the Lviv Uspensky Brotherhood. It demonstrates how the Galician press of the 1860s popularized Cossack history among a wide readership.
