INFORMATION
Oleksandr Murashko (1875–1919) — painter and educator, one of the key figures of Ukrainian art in the early 20th century. Born in Kyiv, spent his childhood in Borzna in Chernihiv Oblast; acquired his first skills in his father's icon workshop, later worked on auxiliary tasks in the decoration of St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, where he was supported by A. Prakhov, V. Vasnetsov, and M. Nesterov. In 1894, he entered the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, studying in Ilya Repin's workshop. After studying in Paris and Munich, he developed his own style, based on open color and broad brushwork. In 1909, the painting "Carousel" won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Munich and was purchased by the Budapest Museum; that same year, solo exhibitions were held in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Cologne, later — participation in the Venice Biennale and in the exhibitions of the Munich Secession. Taught at the Kyiv Art School, was among the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts (1917). Killed in Kyiv in June 1919.
The album was prepared by art historian Larysa Chlenova, a long-time researcher of the artist's legacy. The introductory article is presented in Ukrainian with parallel Russian and English translations; it is followed by a list of works indicating their location. The illustrative part consists of 68 reproductions, among which are "Still Life" (1892), "Girl with a Dog" (1901), "Portrait of Polish Artist Jan Stanislawski" (1906), "Girl at a Table" (1910–1912), and "Self-Portrait" (1918). The publication remains one of the basic reference sources on Murashko's work, a significant part of which was lost or is of unknown location.
