INFORMATION
“Tsar Plaksyi and Loskoton” is Vasyl Symonenko’s rhyming fairy tale about a kingdom where laughter is forbidden and a cheerful Loskoton defeats a gloomy tyrant with his laughter. Written in the early 1960s, it was read both as a children’s fairy tale and as a subtle satire on Soviet reality.
The illustrations by Anatolii Bazylevych, known for his edition of Kotlyarevsky’s “Eneida,” are based on traditional Ukrainian decorative painting: bold flat colors, grotesque characters, and decorative floral vases.
