INFORMATION

Ivan Dmytryk (1919–1998), pseudonym "Drohomyr," was a soldier in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army's Ren Regiment, which operated in the Lemko region from 1944 to 1947. He wrote down his memoirs immediately after arriving in the West, while the events were still fresh in his memory, recounting them from the perspective of a rank-and-file soldier: about his company, insurgent life, raids, and preparations to cross the front, without generalizations or later commentary.

The book was first published by Suchasnist in 1976 and was later reprinted. According to researchers, the publishing house smuggled it into the USSR by binding the text into the cover and the first pages of Sydor Kovpak's memoirs "From Putivl to the Carpathians." The maps for this edition were compiled by Yoakim Vyshnevetsky, and the cover is decorated with a woodcut by Nil Khashevych—a graphic artist of the Ukrainian underground.
