INFORMATION

It all began with a bomb thrown in Lviv on September 5, 1924, at Polish President Stanisław Wojciechowski. It was not the assassin who was brought to trial, but an accidental detainee, Stanisław Steiger, who was tried in a brazen manner just ten days later. Knysh tells of this trial and of the second legal case that arose from it—the case of Korngaber and his accomplices, accused of fraud and extortion. A separate chapter is devoted to the murder in Lviv of police agent Tsekhnovsky and the execution of the assassin.

Zinoviy Knysh (1906–1999) was a lawyer, political activist, and historian of the UVO and OUN. Born in Kolomyia, he earned a doctorate in law from Lviv University in 1930; from 1924 he belonged to the UVO, and in 1931 was sentenced to eight years in prison. From 1946 he lived in Paris, and from 1949 in Toronto, where he published the "Sribna Surma" collections and his own works on the history of the UVO.

The book was published in Toronto under the "Sribna Surma" imprint, but printed in Paris at the Première Imprimerie Ukrainienne en France—as evidenced by the inscription on the reverse of the title page. On the reverse of the boards is a list of this circle's publications: the "Sribna Surma" collections, "On the Prut in the Meadow..." about Kolomyia, "Thus the Pen Writes..." and other works by Knysh.
